The restless night left me groggy and irritable as I stumbled into the kitchen, desperate for a strong cup of coffee. As the machine gurgled and hissed, I pulled out a carton of eggs and some veggies from the fridge. If I was going to be up at this ungodly hour, I might as well make myself useful.

I cracked the eggs into a bowl, my mind drifting to the alien currently sprawled out on my couch. The memory of his lips on mine, the heat of his body pressed against me, sent a shiver down my spine. I shook my head, trying to clear the thoughts away. I needed to focus on getting him to Santa Fe, not on the way his purple eyes seemed to see straight into my soul.

The sizzle of the eggs hitting the hot pan filled the small kitchen, and I lost myself in the familiar motions of cooking. I might not be the chef at the diner, but I'd picked up a few tricks from watching him work. By the time the omelettes were plated and steaming, the scent of coffee and melted cheese had permeated the entire trailer.

I heard a rustling from the living room, followed by a low groan as Zayne unfolded his long body from the cramped couch. He stretched, his borrowed hoodie riding up to reveal a sliver of metallic skin. I quickly averted my gaze, busying myself with pouring two mugs of coffee.

"Hope you're hungry," I called out, a smile tugging at the corners of my mouth as I watched him pad into the kitchen, his silver hair tousled from sleep.

"For human food? Always." Zayne slid into a chair at the small table, his eyes widening as I set a plate in front of him. I took a bite of my own omelette, savoring the burst of flavor on my tongue, before spreading out a map I'd dug out of my closet.

I traced my finger along the marked paths, trying to determine the best path. Zayne watched me work, his gaze intense and unwavering.

"Lucia," he moaned, his mouth full of egg and cheese. "This is amazing."

I felt a blush creep into my cheeks at his praise. I'd never been much of a cook, but something about seeing Zayne devour the meal I'd made filled me with a sense of pride. A happy warmth spread through my body, and I realized that I enjoyed taking care of him, of being the one to provide for him in this small way.

"Glad you like it," I said, trying to keep my voice casual. "I made us some sandwiches for the trip. It's going to take a few hours to get there via this route," I pointed to the map, my finger tracing a winding path through the desert. "But I think it's our best shot of getting you into the city undetected."

Zayne's metallic skin gleamed under the fluorescent kitchen light as he gazed at me intently after finishing the omelette I had prepared.
